How many ways are there to spell the 36 vowel sounds? The answer is over 350!

Here’s an example. When the i appears in the English language, it could be long or short. The symbol i may totally be missing from the English spelling. If the i is missing, it is encased in parentheses.  Missing long I is (I). Missing short i is (i). Silent vowel symbols are underlined.

That’s 38 ways to arrange symbols to represent i.

Long I (i is present in the word)

  • I e: wipe
  • I: hi
  • Ic: kind
  • Ie: lie
  • Io: violent
  • eI: height

Long I (i is not present in the word)

  • ia: commercial
  • ia e: immediate
  • ie: patient
  • i e: interest
  • io: frustration
  • iou: conscious
  • ai: certain
  • ui: build

Short i (i is not present in the word)
